Magnificent Northumberland

We are situated just outside the small town of WOOLER, known as the 'Gateway to the Cheviots'. Look at the map link to see where we are - a beautiful location for exploring the whole of Northumbria and the Scottish Borders. Indeed, Edinburgh is only 70 miles away and there is a good rail service from Berwick.

There is so much on the doorstep here though, limited only by the amount of time you have to explore. Look on a map and draw a 25 mile radius around Firwood. Now look to see what is encompassed in that circle! From the beautiful scenery around Wooler, with the Cheviot Hills and valleys as the backdrop, to the wonderful Northumberland coastline, unspoilt beaches, fishing villages and coastal castles. The estate owned villages of Ford and Etal, The Alnwick Garden and Castle, the Chillingham Wild Cattle Herd, Chillingham Castle (reputed to be Very Haunted!), Cragside Hall, the former residence of Lord Armstrong, now a National Trust property, Bamburgh Castle, Howick Hall, where Earl Grey Tea has its roots, Seahouses, where the boats leave to go to the Farne Isles, Craster, where the kippers are still smoked in the traditional manner…..the list is endless. For more information go to Northumberland Attractions

One of the advantages of Firwood is that if you are walking the Cheviot you can leave your car here and walk up the road into Harthope Valley and on to the Cheviot. Or meander round the many circular walks from the valley bottom to the higher ground alongside, taking in the popular beauty spot of Happy Valley. If you are a keen bird watcher (or even if you are not!) you won’t be disappointed at the diversity, from the National Park emblem of the Curlew, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Spotted Flycatchers - too many types of birds to mention!

How to find us

Firwood nestles close to the Cheviot hills just about a mile and a half from the town of Wooler in Northumberland. Wooler is located on the A697 about 18 miles south of the Scottish border. We are very easy to find from the centre of Wooler but if you are at all unsure, please park in the town, somewhere easily found (the Co-op is a good choice!) give us a ring and we will come and guide you in. Don't forget, if you are on Public Transport, again, give us a ring from the town and we will collect you.

Take the first turning into Wooler on your left marked Town Centre, off the A697 on a right hand bend. This takes you up a hill and as you reach the top, you will see a pub called the Wheatsheaf on your right hand side. Opposite this is a sharp left hand turn, by another pub, this time the Anchor, up a hill signed Harthope Valley and Northumberland National Park - take this left turning. Follow this road (out into the country!) until you come to a right hand turn, straight on for Northumberland N.P. and right for Earle and Middleton Hall. Take the right hand turn. As you come into Earle, there is another sign on a left hand bend for Middleton Hall and Langleeford, continue on this road for just under 1/2 mile, passing a long low white building on your right (Walkerwalls), followed by another couple of white cottages and then our B+B sign is straight after these, again on your right. Turn, come up the drive and step out at the front of the house and start contemplating.
