The current Middleton Hall was built in 1807 and as the family grew it became necessary to build an additional house which is Firwood. This was commonly known in the day as a Dowager Lodge.
It was lived in for over 90 years by Captain Humphrey Simpson and retains many of its original features. Porticoed entrance with tiled hallway, wide Georgian style doors leading to spacious lounge and dining rooms, both with original open fires and bay windows in which to sit and contemplate the views
The 3 en-suite bedrooms, are again spacious, with original fireplaces, sash windows and all the accommodation is on ground level. They are decorated in individual period styles but with all the mod cons, see accommodation.
If you want to take time out from sightseeing, sit for a while and just enjoy our garden and the wildlife, about 1 acre of lawns and terraces and woodland, with views over the surrounding Northumberland countryside. Â The latest project in the garden is an observation deck on the lower lawn, ideal for star gazing, bat watching and of course for bird watching or Red Squirrel spotting during the day. Or just for sitting on.
If you come in the right season, help yourself to an apple, or plum to munch on. We are also in an ideal position for many local walks, from easy, circular strolls, to the more strenuous assaults on the Cheviots – many of which can be started and finished at Firwood.
And don’t forget, if you do fall in a stream and get wet while out walking the Northumberland Hills, let us dry off your boots and clothes ready for your next trip. If you are cycling, there is secure storage for bikes, help with cycling routes and Mike is a handy for tyre blowing up or minor cycle maintenance.
